Steam Connection Timed Out Error: How to Fix Easily (2022)

If you regularly download games from the Steam platform we are sure you might have heard or experienced the Steam Connection TImes Out error. This is one of the most common errors that you can encounter and many users have complained about this error since it has been present for a long time leaving many players frustrated.

This error comes up when you are downloading a game, in the downloads tab under Connection Timeout. This error usually pops up after a few minutes from when you started downloading the game. It is a highly annoying glitch since the game will keep showing the Connection Timeout error even after several attempts.

So Why Does It Happen?

There are several reasons for this error to pop up, these include –

  • Slow Internet Connection
  • Steam servers down
  • Overloaded servers
  • Region Server Issues

How to Fix This Error?

1. Change Your Download Region

You might not know this but Steam gives you an option to change your download region to any one of the many regions provided in the list.

To change your download region-

  • Go to settings – Open Steam and go to the settings menu. You will be able to find this menu on the top left of your screen.
  • Go to Downloads– In the settings menu go to the downloads menu where you will find the Download Region setting.
  • Change Your Region– Under the Download Region setting you will find many regions that can be chosen to be your download region. Make sure to try different regions and see which one works the best for you and provides the most download speed.

Restart Steam each time you change your download region and keep on trying different regions if the problem still persists. This is the most common fix for this problem and works for most people experiencing the same error.

2. Disable Firewall

Firewall is a great way to protect your device from unwanted malware that may be accidentally downloaded but firewall can also interrupt some files that are completely safe. Games downloaded through steam have little to no chance of containing viruses or files that may harm your device since games bought through steam are verified games with prior testing done on them.

If the first fix does not solve your problem, you can try disabling your firewall and complete the download of the game. Once the game is downloaded, re-enable the firewall. If you don’t want to completely disable the Firewall, you can simply just disable the Firewall for steam that should work too.

3. Reinstall Steam

If everything else fails, you should simply try to reinstall Steam on your device and hope this error does not take place again. This has also worked for many players so it is at least worth the try if the first two methods fail.
