Top 5 Ways to Fix “A Driver Cannot Load on This Device” Error on Windows 11/10

Yes, we understand it can be frustrating when your windows PC throws keeping random errors from time to time, hey but that’s how Windows is. One such error out of the blue is “a driver cannot load on this device”. But the solutions for this problem aren’t as intimidating as the error. This error usually shows up when the driver is having compatibility issues or misconfigured settings.

So now, we shall try to fix this “A Driver Cannot Load on This Device” Error on Windows. This guide will work for both windows 10 and 11, after all, windows 11 is only an incremental upgrade from windows 10. Follow this guide step by step until you find the fix for your issue. Here we go

Fix 1 Update the driver:

Such issues can happen when the drivers you are using are outdated, therefore causing incompatibility issues. So you can simply start by updating the specific driver you are looking for.

  • Right-click on the windows icon, which is located on the taskbar and select device manager. If you are on windows 10, you can right-click anywhere on the taskbar.
  • Once the device manager window gets open, select the device you are facing an issue with, it can be a mouse, touchpad, display, etc. Right-click on the desired device and select update driver.
  • If the driver hasn’t been updated automatically you can also update it manually. You can find the respective drivers you are looking for on the internet. Be sure you are only getting official drivers from the official websites of the respective manufacturers.
  • After proper installation, restart your PC.

So once you have updated your drivers to the latest version check whether the issue still persists.

Fix 2 Rollback to previous drivers:

Yes, I agree, it is quite ironic. Sometimes such errors might occur just after you have installed the latest driver, because the latest drivers can’t be stable always, leading to such issues. What you can do in this situation is to roll back to your previous version of the specific driver.

  • Right-click on the windows icon, which is located on the taskbar and select device manager. If you are on windows 10, you can right-click anywhere on the taskbar.
  • Once the device manager window gets open, select the device you are facing an issue with, it can be a mouse, touchpad, display, etc. Right-click on the desired device and select properties
  • Navigate to the driver section and select rollback to the previous version of the drivers.
  • If the driver hasn’t been rolled back automatically you can also roll back it manually. You can find the respective drivers you are looking for on the internet. Be sure you are only getting official drivers from the official websites of the respective manufacturers.
  • Once the drivers have been installed properly, restart the PC.

So once you have rolled back your drivers to the previous stable version check whether the issue still persists.

Fix 3 Remove upper filters and lower filters registry values:

These kinds of errors can also occur when the registry files/data are corrupted. You can correct this by deleting them, specifically in this case the upper filters and lower filters. But before going ahead, we need the globally unique identifier(GUID). So follow the below-mentioned steps one by one:

  • Open the Windows Run dialogue box, which can be accessed by pressing Windows key+R.
  • Then type in the command devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
  • Now once the device manager shows up, select the driver you are facing an issue with and right-click on it and then select properties.
  • Navigate to the Details tab and click the drop-down menu under Property, then select Class GUID. Now note the value that appears.
  • Again open the Windows Run dialogue box, which can be accessed by pressing Windows key+R.
  • Now type in the command regedit and hit enter.
  • Now registry edit window is pretty confusing, you will be easily lost in it, so just copy this address and paste it into the address bar, here’s the address HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
  • Now under the Class folder, you must find the GUID we noted before, once it is selected you can find upper filters and lower filters on the right pane of the window.
  • Now go ahead and delete both of them, you do this by simply right-clicking them and selecting the delete option.
  • Once it’s done, make sure you restart your PC.

So once you have deleted the upper filters and lower filters from the registry, check whether the issue still persists.

Fix 4 Turn off memory integrity:

Memory Integrity is a feature in Windows security that might prevent a driver from loading sometimes. You might see the ‘A driver cannot load on this device’ error when that happens. It is recommended that you disable the Memory Integrity feature to get rid of this error on your PC.

  • Open windows search, simply click on the windows icon and start typing in the word Windows Security.
  • Navigate to device security.
  • Select core isolation.
  • Select core isolation details.
  • Turn off memory integrity, if it is enabled in the first place.

Once you have performed the above-mentioned fix, try and see If the issue still remains.

Fix 5 Use a driver update tool:

Trying to fix a driver manually can be a hectic task and might not always work, just for that you have automatic driver updater tools. Not only do they update existing drivers, but they can also repair them if it is required. You can try this step only as a last resort as one cannot trust such software unless it is open-source software. You can try tools such as Driver easy, Snappy driver updater, AVG driver updater, TweakBit driver updater, etc.
